Australian importers pay 0% duty on most Thai goods under the Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA), in force since 2005. Combined with Thailand's world-class manufacturing and competitive pricing, the landed economics are compelling.

TAFTA in Force
The Thailand-Australia Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA) entered into force on January 1, 2005, and remains one of Australia's most comprehensive bilateral trade agreements. Under TAFTA, the vast majority of Thai goods exported to Australia attract a 0% preferential tariff rate β a significant advantage over non-FTA origins.
TAFTA covers goods in virtually all product categories including food and agricultural products, manufactured goods, chemicals, textiles, machinery, electronics, and consumer products. A small number of sensitive agricultural lines retain tariff protections, but for most industrial and commercial goods, the rate is zero.
Your Thai manufacturer must obtain a TAFTA Certificate of Origin from DITP (Department of International Trade Promotion) or an accredited Thai chamber of commerce before shipment.
Goods must be substantially manufactured in Thailand β typically meaning at least 40% of the goods' cost originates in Thailand (or an ASEAN country under cumulation provisions).
Present the Certificate of Origin to your customs broker with your import declaration. The Australian Border Force (ABF) will apply the preferential 0% rate to qualifying goods.
Australia imports over AUD $13.5 billion in goods from Thailand annually, making Thailand one of Australia's top 10 import sources. The trade relationship is deep, long-standing, and covers a wide spectrum of product categories.

Top Australian import categories from Thailand include passenger vehicles (Toyota Hilux, Fortuner), processed food and seafood (canned tuna, frozen shrimp), rubber and plastic products, electronics and electrical components, textiles and garments, gems and jewelry, beauty products, and industrial machinery.
Toyota (Hilux, Fortuner, HiAce), Isuzu D-Max, and a comprehensive range of OEM and aftermarket auto parts are manufactured in Thailand and exported to Australia in large volumes. Thailand's Thai-Australia auto corridor is well-established.
Canned tuna, coconut milk, Thai sauces, jasmine rice, frozen prawns, and ready-to-eat Thai meals are staples in Australian supermarkets. Thai processors supply Woolworths, Coles, IGA, and specialty food retailers directly.
Hard disk drives, computer peripherals, LED lighting, transformers, and consumer electronics. Thailand's electronics sector is world-class and serves the Australian market through both established brands and private label supply chains.
Rubber gloves, rubber flooring, polymer packaging, plastic containers, and speciality rubber components are exported from Thailand to Australian industrial and retail markets in substantial quantities.
Activewear, fashion garments, swimwear, workwear, and Thai silk products. Australian fashion brands and retailers source private-label garments from Thai manufacturers with flexible MOQs and strong English communication.
Teak furniture, rattan, bamboo products, home accessories, and ceramics are popular imports for the Australian furniture retail and interior design sectors. Northern Thai artisan production is particularly prized.
Natural and herbal cosmetics, spa products, aromatherapy, and skincare formulated with Thai botanicals. Australian wellness and natural beauty brands increasingly source OEM products from Thai manufacturers compliant with Australian cosmetics regulations.
Bangkok is a global gem-trading and jewelry manufacturing hub. Australian jewelry retailers and designers source coloured gemstones, finished silver and gold jewelry, and semi-precious stone pieces directly from Thai manufacturers.
Food processing equipment, agricultural machinery, plastic injection moulding machines, and industrial tools manufactured in Thailand serve Australian SME manufacturers and food producers seeking cost-competitive capital equipment.
PET bottles, HDPE containers, flexible packaging, and specialty plastic components are sourced from Thai manufacturers by Australian FMCG brands, food producers, and packaging distributors seeking cost-effective, quality-certified supply.
You must have an active Australian Business Number (ABN) to import commercially. Register at abr.business.gov.au if you haven't already. You'll need your ABN for customs declarations and GST registration.
Commercial imports require a licensed customs broker to lodge the Integrated Cargo System (ICS) import entry with the Australian Border Force (ABF). Brokers handle tariff classification, duty calculation, and TAFTA CO verification. Expect broker fees of AUD $150β400 per consignment.
All imports must be classified under the Australian Harmonised Export Commodity Classification (AHECC) / HS tariff code. Your customs broker will advise on correct classification, which determines the applicable duty rate (0% under TAFTA for most Thai goods).
Your customs broker will lodge an Integrated Cargo System (ICS) entry with the Australian Border Force. Formal entry is required for consignments with a customs value of AUD $1,000 or more. The ICS system processes most entries within 24β48 hours electronically.
Australia applies 10% GST on the customs value of imports plus any customs duty payable. For GST-registered importers, this amount is typically claimable as a GST credit in your BAS lodgement. Ensure you are GST-registered (required once turnover exceeds AUD $75,000/year).
All food imports must comply with the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) Food Standards Code. This covers labelling requirements (ingredient lists, nutrition panels, country of origin, allergen declarations), permitted food additives, and microbial standards. Importers are responsible for compliance β the ABF may refer food consignments to DAFF for inspection.
Therapeutic goods (supplements, vitamins, herbal medicines) require TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) registration or listing before import and sale in Australia. Cosmetics do not require TGA registration but must comply with the NICNAS/AICIS industrial chemicals framework for ingredient safety.
Electrical and electronic products must comply with Australian electrical safety standards under the Electrical Equipment Safety System (EESS) and electromagnetic compatibility requirements regulated by ACMA (Australian Communications and Media Authority). Many Thai electronics already hold CE marking which supports compliance.
All plant and animal products require import permits from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF). Australia's strict biosecurity regime requires that agricultural imports meet specific conditions β treatment requirements, fumigation, or import permits. Seafood imports require health certificates from Thai competent authorities.
Most Thai exports to Australia depart from Laem Chabang Port (LCB), located approximately 120km south of Bangkok in Chonburi Province. Laem Chabang is Thailand's primary deep-sea container port, operating as a major regional hub.
